February road tripping into Death Valley by the back road. Epic views of SNOW covered mountains. What’s with that? This is Death Valley.

It was hard to crawl out of the sleeping bag that morning before sunrise. The temperature had dropped below freezing and stars were still hanging in the sky like ice crystals.

But it is never as bad once you are dressed.

Off to see the renowned sunrise from Zabriskie Point and it lived up to the hype. The picture at the top was taken from there.

Once you are out, you may as well keep going, right? So off to Golden Canyon for a dawn walk. Death Valley is all about the geology scenery. And the colours of blue an pink that looked like paint, were natural deposits of minerals.

Dunes. What is it about the silky look of a sand dune? We went in search of the dunes in the golden light of late afternoon. As usual we took the road untravelled and approached the dunes from a different angle.

For a couple of “wet coast” people, we couldn’t get over the strange surroundings. Dunes and sand and no moss!
